Care Guide

Cherry shrimp are the perfect introduction to freshwater invertebrates. A stable, cycled, planted tank of 20 litres or more will soon host a thriving, self-sustaining colony.

They are extremely sensitive to copper (check medications and fertilisers) and to ammonia, so stability matters more than exact parameters. Feed sparingly with biofilm, algae and the occasional shrimp pellet or blanched vegetable.

Behaviour

Constantly grazing scavengers that breed readily and add red colour to planted tanks.

Compatibility

Ideal for nano and shrimp-only tanks; keep with snails or tiny peaceful fish that won't eat them.

Breeding

Breeds easily in stable water; females carry eggs under the tail until miniature shrimp hatch.

Disease Risks

Sensitive to copper, ammonia spikes and rapid parameter swings; bacterial infections. See our fish disease database for treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cherry shrimp live with fish?
Yes, with small peaceful fish, but most fish will eat baby shrimp. For maximum breeding, keep a shrimp-only tank.
Why are my shrimp dying?
Most losses come from copper exposure, ammonia spikes, or sudden parameter changes. Acclimate slowly and avoid copper-based products.
