Symptoms

Floating upside down, sinking to the bottom, struggling to stay upright or swimming at odd angles.

Causes

Overfeeding and constipation, gulping air with floating food, rapid temperature changes, or bacterial infection and physical deformity.

Treatment

Fast the fish for 2-3 days, then feed a blanched, de-shelled pea to relieve constipation. Lower the water level and raise temperature slightly. Treat with antibacterials if infection is suspected.

Prevention

Soak dry/floating foods before feeding, avoid overfeeding, feed vegetable matter, and keep temperatures stable.
